It’s like fish in a barrel with crime stories:
STLMORONS April 27, 2009 12:56PM CST Just another example of the sTl Morons. Half of you blame the mayor??? WHat! These Mondays are going around shooting people because they are uncivilized animals and you blame the mayor. Maybe if theyz had a litlle mo edumacation the Mondays wouldn’t resort to violence. In case you are wondering what Mondays are…..think about it. Everyone hates Mondays.

It’s clear that the decision to allow comments on news stories wasn’t planned very well. Is thread moderation *anyone’s* primary responsibility, or is it something done in the margins when folks have the time? Are there policies in place? Have these policies been communicated to users? If so, are they enforced with any consistency, or are posts killed when they meet some arbitrary threshold (if they happen to be noticed at all)? Are there any enforceable terms of service that will result in account termination when lines are crossed?
Knowing how the Post/STLtoday operates, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that this was a directive handed down from on high, by someone who has little understanding of the web, in some panicked more to make the site more “sticky” and create “community” and thereby drive additional ad views.
From the perspective of someone who doesn’t live in the area any more but still reads the site, it’s doing an incredible amount of harm in reinforcing existing perceptions of the area as racially intolerant….
What’s great about this one–the post above and below were both moderated. Essentially if you use Mondays as a replacement for the n word– you are aokay.
