Busy Day, but here is one:

Keith May 4, 2009 6:34AM CST
What a enchanting story! It makes me fell all warm and fuzzy to see another family, complete with grandma, moving into public housing? Movin’ on up baby!

Of course, most of the day appears to have been spent on people introducing rumors about the mother and two children killed in Illinois and Lacy Clay.

Why does a newspaper allow people to speculate about murders?  It’s a really bizarre situation where people are spreading rumors about a man with no evidence in the Illinois case and yet there are multiple accusations and speculative claims about what must have happened.

What is the purpose of that even?  It’s certainly libelous and worse, hurtful.  It serves no purpose.

In the case of Clay, there are multiple claims about what Lacy has done, but other than his wife’s letter no support for it.  Why is the speculation about his fidelity legitimate?  The same sort of nonsense was taking place with rumors about Matt Blunt and the content of the e-mails and I believe the P-D did a fairly good job of stopping those as they should.

It may well be that Lacy Clay was cheating on his wife, but random anonymous comments in stories shouldn’t be where that is introduced.

Teh Gay shouldn’t hold office:

Did the Missouri voters know Justus was a queer when they elected her(or him)? Oh, I just noticed she is from KCMo. Those people just don’t know any better. She (or he) should be voted out at the next election.

Just question all the young african american males with a criminal record that live in north city/county. Oh wait, that would be about 40,000 people. Nevermind.

His hair os so awesome. Long live Jehi-Curl!

Lacy’s hair is essentially shaved.

Kurt just mentioned some stories aren’t linked–essentially I just did a site upgrade and I’m having some minor issues with links.  Drop a note in comments and I’ll fix those going forward.

Let me add, I have no particular love of Lacy, but the rumor mongering in a thread with such personal news is pretty offensive and may even by libelous.

Unless you think Saint Louis never went through a period of decline, he’s dead on.  And if you don’t, you aren’t paying attention:

McCracken starts the video clip by saying: “If you lived in St. Louis in 1904, you thought you were in the center of the universe” as it hosted events like the World’s Fair. Today, he says, “entire sections of St. Louis’ urban core have been abandoned for decades . . There’s a warning to cities all over the country in St. Louis’ story. Just because you have a great present or a bright past is no guarantee of a better future.”

He notes that the semiconductor industry, once the backbone of Austin’s economy, is faltering as those jobs move overseas. “How do we move forward instead of simply standing still and beginning a St. Louis-style decline?” he asks.

Then he hammers home his campaign theme of creating and recruiting jobs in clean energy, bio tech, and digital media.

One commenter on the Web site of a St. Louis TV station offered this: “Hey ‘Brewster,’ you have no right to talk about a terrific city like St. Louis with a goofy name like that. St. Louis may not be perfect, but you know what’s awesome about it? You’re not in it.”

And Austin mayoral candidate Lee Leffingwell sent a St. Louis TV reporter this message: “St. Louis is a terrific city and I don’t believe it deserves to be compared unfavorably to any other city,” he said. “There are lots of things about St. Louis that other cities, including Austin, ought to be jealous of.”

Colin Rowan, a spokesman for McCracken, said the video “is a legitimate historic case study of what happens when a city sits still. I know everyone’s protective of their hometown. Leaders there should be commended for their efforts to revitalize the city. But the point remains, they did have to revitalize,” Rowan said. “Brewster doesn’t want Austin’s leaders in 50 years to have to revitalize Austin. He wants to chart a proactive course to strengthen our economy now.”

In a post about a 17 year old assaulting a teacher, we get treated to a bunch of juvenile references to how the young woman looks  and questioning of her sexuality:

lawlady April 29, 2009 8:27PM CST

Wow….that’s a girl…um…yeah, I would say she’s having an identity crisis for sure. She needs some counseling.

DOGTOWNERS April 29, 2009 8:31PM CST

I bet her friends call her MEL….

gobler April 29, 2009 9:24PM CST

nddp4me….you say she is probably made fun of and picked on?…Perhaps…but look and act right and it will stop. Did the being made fun of come first or after bizarre look and behavior? After, I would bet. Just like a few other posters said…this is not the first for her you can bet. She has probably done this all along but the school rewards the behavior and reinforces it. If you act bad enough, they do not require as much, expect very little, and let you get by with stuff no one else would even think about. Next stop…incarceration…because as schools….we teach this type of behavior instead of booting them out.

Ol’WyleeDawg April 29, 2009 9:29PM CST

Hmmmmmmmm…….. a manly female perhaps?crew cut?why?
A 17 year old is responsible for her behavior and certainly this behavior is appalling, but let’s look how it is treated in a comment thread at a supposedly respected publication. Teenage humor dominates because the young woman doesn’t look like some posters expect her to and they question her sexuality and then excuse potential bullying because she’s weird.
This is good discussion?  How?  It’s homophobic stupidity at the level of a pre-pubescent boy.
The commenters are making up stories about how this individual must have come to be with nothing more than a picture a short story in a newspaper. How is that speculation not on par with rumor mongering?  And how does  a news organization allow it to continue?

Easiest blogging ever:

usernametaken April 30, 2009 9:39AM CST A couple of quotes by Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood that sums up this article nicely…

On blacks:
“…human weeds,’ ‘reckless breeders,’ ’spawning… human beings who never should have been born.”

Margaret Sanger, Pivot of Civilization.

On the extermination of blacks:
“We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population.”

Woman’s Body, Woman’s Right: A Social History of Birth Control in America, by Linda Gordon

The Post-Dispatch has made it abundantly clear that veiling racism is all you have to do to keep your comments up at the site and white supremacists continue to take advantage of that.

Not sure why everyone is upset about Brewster McCracken’s ad in Austin, who doesn’t think that Saint Louis made decades of mistake that led to the decline of the center city and essentially flat growth as a metropolitan region?

Saint Louis is a good example of bad decisions made years ago.  Certainly there are good signs and dramatic improvements in the last 15 years, but nothing the guy with the funny name said is cruel or inaccurate.

Frankly, we could use some Brewster McCracken’s in Saint Louis.
