Lacy’s hair is essentially shaved.

Kurt just mentioned some stories aren’t linked–essentially I just did a site upgrade and I’m having some minor issues with links.  Drop a note in comments and I’ll fix those going forward.

Let me add, I have no particular love of Lacy, but the rumor mongering in a thread with such personal news is pretty offensive and may even by libelous.

Unless you think Saint Louis never went through a period of decline, he’s dead on.  And if you don’t, you aren’t paying attention:

McCracken starts the video clip by saying: “If you lived in St. Louis in 1904, you thought you were in the center of the universe” as it hosted events like the World’s Fair. Today, he says, “entire sections of St. Louis’ urban core have been abandoned for decades . . There’s a warning to cities all over the country in St. Louis’ story. Just because you have a great present or a bright past is no guarantee of a better future.”

He notes that the semiconductor industry, once the backbone of Austin’s economy, is faltering as those jobs move overseas. “How do we move forward instead of simply standing still and beginning a St. Louis-style decline?” he asks.

Then he hammers home his campaign theme of creating and recruiting jobs in clean energy, bio tech, and digital media.

One commenter on the Web site of a St. Louis TV station offered this: “Hey ‘Brewster,’ you have no right to talk about a terrific city like St. Louis with a goofy name like that. St. Louis may not be perfect, but you know what’s awesome about it? You’re not in it.”

And Austin mayoral candidate Lee Leffingwell sent a St. Louis TV reporter this message: “St. Louis is a terrific city and I don’t believe it deserves to be compared unfavorably to any other city,” he said. “There are lots of things about St. Louis that other cities, including Austin, ought to be jealous of.”

Colin Rowan, a spokesman for McCracken, said the video “is a legitimate historic case study of what happens when a city sits still. I know everyone’s protective of their hometown. Leaders there should be commended for their efforts to revitalize the city. But the point remains, they did have to revitalize,” Rowan said. “Brewster doesn’t want Austin’s leaders in 50 years to have to revitalize Austin. He wants to chart a proactive course to strengthen our economy now.”

In a post about a 17 year old assaulting a teacher, we get treated to a bunch of juvenile references to how the young woman looks  and questioning of her sexuality:

lawlady April 29, 2009 8:27PM CST

Wow….that’s a girl…um…yeah, I would say she’s having an identity crisis for sure. She needs some counseling.

DOGTOWNERS April 29, 2009 8:31PM CST

I bet her friends call her MEL….

gobler April 29, 2009 9:24PM CST

nddp4me….you say she is probably made fun of and picked on?…Perhaps…but look and act right and it will stop. Did the being made fun of come first or after bizarre look and behavior? After, I would bet. Just like a few other posters said…this is not the first for her you can bet. She has probably done this all along but the school rewards the behavior and reinforces it. If you act bad enough, they do not require as much, expect very little, and let you get by with stuff no one else would even think about. Next stop…incarceration…because as schools….we teach this type of behavior instead of booting them out.

Ol’WyleeDawg April 29, 2009 9:29PM CST

Hmmmmmmmm…….. a manly female perhaps?crew cut?why?
A 17 year old is responsible for her behavior and certainly this behavior is appalling, but let’s look how it is treated in a comment thread at a supposedly respected publication. Teenage humor dominates because the young woman doesn’t look like some posters expect her to and they question her sexuality and then excuse potential bullying because she’s weird.
This is good discussion?  How?  It’s homophobic stupidity at the level of a pre-pubescent boy.
The commenters are making up stories about how this individual must have come to be with nothing more than a picture a short story in a newspaper. How is that speculation not on par with rumor mongering?  And how does  a news organization allow it to continue?

On blacks:
“…human weeds,’ ‘reckless breeders,’ ‘spawning… human beings who never should have been born.”

Margaret Sanger, Pivot of Civilization.

On the extermination of blacks:
“We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population.”

Woman’s Body, Woman’s Right: A Social History of Birth Control in America, by Linda Gordon

The Post-Dispatch has made it abundantly clear that veiling racism is all you have to do to keep your comments up at the site and white supremacists continue to take advantage of that.

Not sure why everyone is upset about Brewster McCracken’s ad in Austin, who doesn’t think that Saint Louis made decades of mistake that led to the decline of the center city and essentially flat growth as a metropolitan region?

Saint Louis is a good example of bad decisions made years ago.  Certainly there are good signs and dramatic improvements in the last 15 years, but nothing the guy with the funny name said is cruel or inaccurate.

Frankly, we could use some Brewster McCracken’s in Saint Louis.

More fun:

beautiful fairy appeared one day to a destitute refugee claimant outside a Maryland immigration office. ‘Good man,’ the fairy said, ‘I’ve been sent here by President Obama and told to grant you three wishes, since you just arrived in the United States with your wife and three children.’
The man told the fairy, ‘Well, where I come from we don’t have good teeth, so I want new teeth – maybe a lot of gold in them.’

The fairy looked at the man’s almost toothless grin and — PING ! — he had a brand new shining set of gold teeth in his mouth!

‘What else?’ asked the fairy, ‘two more to go.’

The refugee claimant now got bolder. ‘I need a big house with a three car garage in Annapolis on the water with eight bedrooms for my family and the rest of my relatives who still live in my country. I want to bring them all over here..

PING! – In the distance there could be seen a beautiful mansion with a three car garage, a long driveway, a walkout patio with a pool in an upscale neighborhood overlooking the bay.

‘One more wish,’ said the fairy, waving her wand.

‘Yes, one more wish. I want to be like an American with American clothes instead of these torn cloths, and a baseball cap instead of this turban. And I want to have white skin like Americans.

PING! – The man was transformed, wearing worn out jeans, a Baltimore Orioles T-shirt and a baseball cap. However, he had his bad teeth back and the mansion had disappeared from the horizon.

‘What happened to my new teeth?’ he wailed. ‘Where is my new house?’

The fairy said ‘Tough shit. Now that you are a White American, you have to fend for yourself.’ And she disappeared.

batson April 28, 2009 2:50PM CST

Lucille, I think the message is, if they lied about this what else has been distorted to create this version of “history”. There is enough “overwhelming evidence” to dispute what you allege. You can look at either side of the issue and make a case. The hysteria created by the victors after WWII to justify their retribution against Germans (remember the phony human skin lamp shades, the death camps in Germany, and other gross distortions of truth) was attributed to the winners. The winners of the war get to write history. Sometimes it takes generations before the truth comes to the surface.

taxpayer April 28, 2009 3:01PM CST

Lucille, you are twisting my words and I resent the insinuation you are making. I did NOT ask “what is the difference between 4 million Jews and 1.5 million Jews” My question is why the Jews propagated this distortion for decades. Your attempt to twist the intent of my observation is typical of the response one gets when a logical question is posed. Answering me with the usual hyterical accusations is not a response. And it is NOT ludicrous to assert that a huge distortion of fact has been demonstrated; no where did I state that the slaughter of Jews did not take place during WWII. Again, I resent you distorting my facts. Jews were slaughtered in WWII, innocent Germans were slaughtered in WWII, the Chinese suffered equally at the hands of the Japanese. Suffering during wartime is not the exclusive province of the Jew.

Lucille April 28, 2009 3:37PM CST

Casualties of war, and the systematic imprisonment and murder of an entire class of people are two different things. With respect to the “hugeness” of the distortion, the focus on the absoute number is misplaced. If it was 1,000 people or 10,000 people or 10,000,000 people, what does it matter? Millions of human being were incarcerated in their own homelands because they were Jewish and then they were murdered. Nobody doubts that this also happened to other classes of people. Gypsies, communists, homo-sexuals, and others were also the victims of Nazi atrocities. The evil perpetrated on those people does not diminish the evil perpetrated upon the Jews. Government sponsored genocide is an abomination and evil that should be castigated by every human being. Those that would contest that this occurred, or try to diminish the enormity of the evil, by pointing out inconsistencies in the record, feed the perverse mania of Anti-Semites and other hate-mongers. If you doubt this, just take a look at baston’s last post wherein this person refers to death camps as a “gross distortion of the truth”.

taxpayer April 28, 2009 3:44PM CST

Lucille-Once again you attempt to distort the truth and twist what was said by another. If you read CLOSELY Batson said that the existence of “death camps” in Germany was a lie. It was a lie. There were NO “death” camps in Germany. This is a historical fact and no attempts by you to manipulate the truth will change that. Is it any wonder that people have legitimate doubts about this whole episode.

usernametaken April 28, 2009 3:53PM CST

There is huge amounts of evidence to suggest there was not systematic gassing of any group of people. Most people who jump on that notion are too stupid to talk to.

There were concentration camps and there was a lot of deaths but it was from starvation and disease, not gassing. Hardly unique in human history but it’s now actually celebrated as a secular religion.

The ‘holocaust’ was the genesis of ‘white guilt’ and the era of aquisition via victimization.

The state of israel was created with the money and technology extorted from Germany after the war.

Most people don’t even know that it’s a crime to deny or even investigate the ‘holocaust’. That just about says it all right there.

Lucille April 28, 2009 4:06PM CST

Thank you for making my point. Now you want to argue about political geography. If the camps were built in German occupied territory, and they were built under the auspices of the German government, I think that would qualify them as German death camps. Please also comment on the drivel posted by usernametaken, I think that will be equally entertaining.

usernametaken April 28, 2009 4:15PM CST

Lucille – just another simpleton who doesn’t know anything about the situation other than schindler’s list.

How much wood would it take to cremate 6.5 million bodies, where are the remains buried, why can’t those areas be investigated, there should be millions of teeth there, why do census records of western europe dispute the disappearance of a number equal to the greater Houston metropolitan area, all wood, concrete, mortar and dirt would have massive levels of testable cyanide that could prove it once and for all… nope, that’s illegal to investigate.

That is not even the tip of the iceberg of massive inconsistencies surrounding the ‘holocaust’.

A reasonable estimate of jews killed under Hitler is between 150-350k. Less than all American boys killed during WW2.

taxpayer April 28, 2009 4:24PM CST

The point, Lucille, was that there are so many inconsistencies and outright lies about the holocaust a cloud of suspicion decends over the whole story. German death camps….for decades we were told the camps in Germany exterminated Jews. The truth is that there never were any death camps in Germany. This was the point being made. The lies associateed with the story of the holocaust. And regards the “drivel” posted by Usernamtaken-he is 100% correct in every statement that he made. But, rather than counter the argument and attempt to present facts, you resort to name calling and casting aspersions. Typical response. What a tangled web we weave when first we practisde to deceive. You now are reduced to telling lie after lie to cover up your previous lies.
